Died: February 6, 1804 in Philadelphia

Joseph Priestley is best known for discovering oxygen or 'good air'. This "good" air, which accounted for about twenty per cent of atmospheric air, he named dephlogisticated air.

The carbonated beverages of today trace their origin to Priestley's initial experiments with fixed air (carbon dioxide).

He simplified experimental techniques for the preparation and collection of gases
