? Back to Blast from the Past

Michael Faraday is known for his pioneering experiments in electricity and magnetism.

MICHAEL FARADAY
Born:
Sept. 22, 1791 at Newington, Surrey, near London
Died: Aug. 25, 1867 in England

In 1831, using his "induction ring", he made one of his greatest discoveries - electromagnetic induction: the "induction" or generation of electricity in a wire by means of the electromagnetic effect of a current in another wire.

He discovered that electricity could be made by moving a magnet inside a wire coil, he was able to build the first electric motor. He later built the first generator and the induction ring was the first electric transformer.

A unit of electricity was named after him. The "farad" measures capacitance, an amount of electrical charge.

Faraday is also remembered for his contributions to the study of chemistry.

Famous Quotes:
"The lecturer should give the audience full reason to believe that all his powers have been exerted for their pleasure and instruction."

"My education was of the most ordinary description, consisting of little more than the rudiments of reading writing and writing at a common day school. My hours out of school were passed at home or on the streets."
